Educational Programs for Grades 1 to 3

Barter & Trade - Outdoors in our 1890's Village

NOT AVAILABLE in January and February.

1st thru 3rd Grade - 2 hours / $4 per student 

Students will travel to specific places within the village and trade their goods and services with the interpreters as they learn about the system of barter and trade, once a very important economic method of rural life. They will design a quilt at the Farmhouse, learn about the Sears & Roebuck catalog and make a purchase in the Schoolhouse, buy or trade for goods at the General Store, get a haircut or tooth pulled at the Barber Shop & purchase a train ticket in the Train Station.

Then & Now - Indoors

1st thru 3rd Grade - 2 hours / $4 per student 

Experience the main building of the museum and discover how life used to be in the early 1800’s. Explore the oldest log cabin in Delaware, learn about a craft (chair caning, basket weaving, and spinning wool) or old fashioned recess games, milking a mock cow, writing with quill pens and examining artifacts found by sifting through our excavation sand pit. Your students will experience how life was different for early farmers and their families.

Village Life - Outdoors in our 1890's Village

NOT AVAILABLE in January and February.

1st thru 3rd Grade - 2 hours / $4 per student 

How does life in an 1890’s village compare with life today? Step back in time with your students and discover life as it used to be. Students will try their hand at washing clothes on a washboard & wringer at the farmhouse, learn the importance of the village blacksmith / wood worker, grind & sift grain in the grist mill, solve a simple math problem using slates & slate pencils in the schoolhouse and put on a skit with song in the church.
