               Educational Programs for Grades 1 - 3



Barter & Trade - Outdoors in our 1890's Village

(available March thru December)


1st thru 3rd Grade - 2 hours / $4 per student 


Students will travel to different buildings in the museums 1890's village as they learn the system of barter and trade, once a very important economic facet of rural life. Students will learn how to design a quilt at the farmhouse, purchase items using the Sears and Roebuck catalog, buy or trade for goods at the general store, get a haircut or tooth pulled at the barber shop and purchase a train ticket at the train station.

1st thru 3rd Grade - 2 hours / $4 per student 


Students learn the many ways in which life was different for farmers and their families over 100 years ago as they explore the exhibits in the main museum and engage in activities under the instruction of our skilled interpretive guides.  Activities focus around the oldest log cabin in Delaware (ca 1750) woodworking, weaving and other artisan crafts from days gone by.  Also included is: "down on the farm" where students learn about the history of the dairy industry in Delaware and learn how to milk a cow.

Village Life - Outdoors in our 1890's Village

How does life in an 1890’s village compare with life today?  Students try their hand at washing clothes on a washboard & wringer at the farmhouse, learn the importance of the village blacksmith / wood worker, grind & sift grain in the grist mill, solve a simple math problem using slates and slate pencils in the schoolhouse and put on a skit in the church.

Christmas in the Village

                                  (available only in December)


                   1st thru 3rd Grade - 2 hours / $4 per student  


Enjoy the sights and feeling of a Victorian Christmas in a rural village. Students travel through our 1890's village and learn about rural Christmas customs -- all activities have a seasonal flavor.
