Educational Programs for Grades 4 to 6
Simple Machines That Work - Indoors & Outdoors in our 1890's Village
(available March thru December)
4th thru 6th Grade - 2 hours / $4 per student
Simple machines and how they work is the focus of this program. Students try out simple machines as they move through the museum and village. How did farmers use simple machines to make their work easier and more productive? Do we use simple machines in everyday life? From tractors to trains, interpreters will help students understand how simple machines make the world work. This program is in the village and the main museum. The village has some unheated buildings so be prepared for the cold.
Correlates to Smithsonian kits – Motion and Design, Simple Machines.

Students learn the many ways in which life was different for farmers and their families over 100 years ago as they explore the exhibits in the main museum and engage in activities under the instruction of our skilled interpretive guides. Activities focus around the oldest log cabin in Delaware (ca 1750) woodworking, weaving and other artisan crafts from days gone by. Also included is: "down on the farm" where students learn about the history of the dairy industry in Delaware and learn how to milk a cow.

Rural Economics - Indoors & Outdoors in our 1890's Village

4th thru 6th Grade - 2 hours / $4 per student
Students learn how barter and trade influenced life in rural communities in the past and is still used today including the differences between wants and needs. Activities include the: 1) school house where students use slates & slate pencils to complete math problems to calculate trade value and how to assign a fair price to goods based on a profit margin and 2) general store where students learn to barter for goods with the storekeeper based on goods and services they can offer in exhchange.

Christmas in the Village
(available only in December)
Enjoy the sights and feeling of a Victorian Christmas in a rural village. Students travel through our 1890's village and learn about rural Christmas customs -- all activities have a seasonal flavor.
